AGERPRES managing director elected ABNA-SE secretary-general

The Managing Director of AGERPRES National News Agency, Alexandru Giboi was elected Secretary-General of the Association of the Balkan News Agencies - Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) on Friday.

The elections were conducted as part of the General Assembly held in Durres, Albania.
George Penintaex, Director/Editor-in-Chief of Cyprus News Agency CNA was the one who proposed that the new ABNA-SE secretary-general be AGERPRES managing director.
I propose Alexandru Giboi as the ABNA secretary-general, because I think Alexandru has will and determination. We expect to have constructive and fruitful cooperation during his mandate in the next two years. We wish ABNA to seriously advance together with Alexandru, especially in the digital area and at the level of the cooperation between the news agencies in the area via the new website, an initiative of Alexandru Giboi. Therefore, I expect the new secretary-general to significantly contribute to the development of this alliance. We must advance, Penintaex said.
AGERPRES National News Agency was the ABNA-SE chairman over Dec. 2013 - Nov. 2014, a context in which Alexandru Giboi presented the General Assembly in Durres the association's activity report for the mentioned period. During this time, the association re-branding and the new website were achieved and a training course was organised for the Balkan journalists in cooperation with Thomson Reuters Foundation.
"ABNA-SE must become the most important support for the journalists of the member agencies", AGERPRES managing director said.
Giboi underscored that ABNA-SE will take official stances of support for the activity of the journalists from across the world, in a difficult context both financially and in terms of their safety.
The Managing Director of Bulgarian News Agency BTA Maxim Minchev congratulated Alexandru Giboi for his election as the ABNA-SE Secretary-General.
"I think that your choice is a very good opportunity not only for AGERPRES, but for all of us, because you have very good ideas, you have energy and we have support from many countries, many agencies to make changes in this very old and very important organisation", Minchev said.
He added the meeting in Durres was "successful". "This meeting was very, very optimistic for our future because our region, South-Eastern Europe I hope that very soon our organization will be bigger because many countries from Eastern Europe, from South Europe will be our members. This is a very good opportunity to make something serious in our profession in this very difficult globalization world", BTA managing director underscored.
The ABNA-SE chairmanship was taken over on Friday by the Albanian News Agency (ATA) via Managing Director Gezim Podgorica.
The Association of the Balkan News Agencies - Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) was set up in 1995 with a view to boosting the cooperation between the news agencies in the region and contributing to enhancing a climate of peace, security and cooperation in the area.
